Here’s a little insight into our sustainability journey…

Sustainable Fibres

Our beautiful outfits are made using natural plant-based fabrics which comply with the Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex®. This certifies that our products are free from hazardous substances, such as toxic dyes and carcinogens, which ensures that our textiles are safe for people and the environment.

In addition, our clothing labels have been made from organic cotton and the hanging ribbons have been made from linen. Whilst using sustainable materials for these finer details came at a slightly higher cost to us, we made this decision as we wished to ensure that our garments aligned with our values. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find non-synthetic alternatives for our zips and elastic which were used in our Kalani jumpsuit. This was a really difficult thing to pass over for us, but don’t worry, we are looking into more alternatives for our next collection.

Did You know That Linen Is Biodegradable And Recyclable? Mother Earth Loves This Fabric Choice, Every Time.

Packaging

It is predicted that the global parcels have surpassed 100 billion, with the majority of those being plastic or non-biodegradable. Without companies taking an active stance, these figures are only going to increase. The tote bags we use when you receive your items are also made from linen which are hand-packed and sent in a satchel made from 100% compostable materials.

We are also proud to use Sendle and Australia Post for all of our shipping which is 100% carbon neutral. Most people don't consider the environmental impact of their online shopping deliveries –but the logistics involved generate a huge amount of CO2 - over 10% of global CO2e emissions are from transport and logistics.Being carbon neutral means that your net release of CO2e into the atmosphere is zero which is done by a process called offsetting.

Our thank you note and swing tags are also made from recycled paper as it is our desire to be known as the label who pays attention to detail, as such details do matter to us.

Ethical Practices

When founding Luna + Sun, we have also been conscious of the 40 million garment workers in the world today whom are commonly exploited for cheap labour and have had their human rights violated. With only 8% of all garments sold in Australia being manufactured locally, we are committed to having our clothing manufactured in Australia with a manufacturer who is accredited with Ethical Clothing Australia.

We are proud to say all our clothing is made in Brisbane by DNA Manufacturers. This accreditation ensures that workers are paid appropriately and receive their minimum legal entitlements and are working in safe conditions throughout the entire supply chain.

Only 8% Of Clothing Sold In Australia Is Manufactured Locally. We Are Proud To Be Australian Made.

Animal Welfare

The welfare of animals is something which we hold very dear to our hearts. We are committed to not using any animal products to make our garments which means they are free of silk, wool, cashmere and leather. We are proud be a 100% vegan friendly label who is accredited by PETA(People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Luna and Sun x AirRobe

We are proud to partner with AirRobe to ensure our brand is as circular as possible.

We already offer all our customers a Take Back Program and partner with Upparel to recycle any items we receive from this program.   But we wanted to go a step further to make it easier for our customers to rent or resell their items.
So when checking out our customers can choose to add AirRobe to their cart which allows them to rent or resell their item when they want.

Luna and Sun x Rntr.

We want to ensure all our items are worn and loved for as long as possible which is why we partnered with Rntr. We only want to encourage people to shop new items when they can wear these items for life.

Rntr gives our community access to wear our beautiful garments for special events and one off occasions. It's a great approach to sustainable shopping for special events. It also allows people to wear sustainable items at a fraction of the cost as this can be a major barrier to shopping sustainably.

We Are A Circular Fashion Label!

One Dollar Two Trees Planted!

We are proud to be one of the first Australian sustainable fashion labels to partner with One Tree Planted; a global NPO who focus on Global Reforestation.

At the checkout page, you will be given an option to plant a tree. For every tree planted by our customers, we will also plant a tree. That means, for $1, we’ve together planted two trees!

For only $1, this is a simple way in which we believe that together we can make a difference to the world around us!

We hope that by partnering with One Tree Planted, we can join their global movement and create a future where both humans and animals can live in harmony.

So far this year, One Tree Planted have been able to plant a record breaking 4 million trees in the ground on behalf of people like you and us! This means because of your generosity, our air is cleaner, our water is filtered and our animals have been provided with new homes. Mother nature thanks you!

For Every Tree Planted By Our Customers, We Will Also Plant A Tree. That Means, For $1, We’ve Together Planted Two Trees!

Waste and End of Life

One of the many benefits of manufacturing locally is we don’t have huge minimum quantities required and we always do small runs. Once we are sold out or have extra demand we produce more. This is one method we use to avoid additional waste. Our patternmaker also ensures that when the patterns are laid out they make the best use of fabric to reduce the amount of fabric wastage. We also have our off cuts made into scrunchies for our customers.

We are also looking into ways to make use of our end rolls of fabric to make gifts for customers or smaller items for our online store. Any longer rolls of fabric that can’t be used by us to make other items will be donated to The Social Studio to help them continue the amazing work they do to help migrant and refugee women.

In our most recent production run I have also kept any off-cuts that weren't able to be made into scrunchies (as they were too small) as I'm looking at home composting these small bits of fabric.

We are currently looking into more ways to reduce our waste and offer more solutions to our customers and we hope to have more initiatives to share with you very soon.

Luna and Sun X Upparel

We are very proud to partner with Upparel to help reduce the amount of textile waste that ends up in landfill every year. Approximately 6000 kgs of clothing is disposed of every 10 minutes in Australia alone. These figures are incredibly alarming and this is something we want to change. For every 1kg of textiles you divert from landfill, you’ll be preventing 3-4kg of greenhouse gases from polluting the atmosphere.

If you have 10kgs of old, unwanted clothing Upparel will pick this up for just $25 and you will receive a $30 store credit to use with Luna and Sun. They make it incredibly easy for you to have your unwanted clothes reused, upcycled or recycled.

Book your collection now!

We also partner with Upparel so any items that are sent back to us as part of our Take Back program will be sent to Upparel for recycling.

Returns and Sample items

Did you know that a large amount of clothing that is returned or used as sample stock in the fashion industry is sent to landfill? This is something that we don't do at Luna and Sun. Since we have launched we haven't sent a single item to landfill. All our returned items are resold or mended and then resold.

We also reuse our sample items and if we can't reuse these items we send these to Save the Children Australia so they can sell, repurpose, or recycle these items through their Save Op shops.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

At Luna and Sun we are also committed to supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s). The fashion industry plays such an important part in achieving several of these goals especially eradicating poverty, gender equality, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water and life on land. Read more about what we are doing to ensure we as a business are contributing to achieving these goals in the link below.

Take Back Program

Since Launching our label we’ve wanted to offer our customers a take back program to ensure any Luna and Sun clothes that can’t be mended, swapped or upcycled can be taken back and recycled.

We are very proud to say we now will offer all our customers a Take Back program so they can send us back any Luna and Sun items that they can no longer wear, mend, swap or upcycle and we will send these to Upparel for recycling
